Clean Air Vehicles with eligible decals are no longer able to use the Express Lane toll-free, though they are eligible for a 50% discount with a registered CAV toll tag.

A CAV toll tag must be obtained online and drivers must upload a copy of their CAV certificate for verification to receive one. Previous versions of the FasTrak Flex tag that instruct CAV drivers to switch the tag to the 3+ position will not receive the discount and should be replaced with the CAV toll tag. A solo driver operating a vehicle with a tag in the "2" or "3+" position risks receiving a carpooling violation from the California Highway Patrol. FasTrak Prepaid- The FasTrak prepaid account accepts prepaid toll payment and allows for discounted toll rates for motorists.

You can make payments via credit card, cash or check. It is accepted on every California toll bridge, lane and roads. At points, the HOV lane was becoming slower than the other lanes on the highway which violated federal standards.

The Clean Air Vehicle program was set to expire on January 1,but in October ofthen Governor Jerry Brown signed into law AB that extended the clean air vehicle program, but with rolling expirations. Essentially, clean air vehicles now get 3 full years of access plus the remainder of the year they applied for the stickers. Eligible carpools with a FasTrak Flex transponder can use the Metro ExpressLanes toll-free. CAVs are no longer allowed to use the 2 or 3+ transponder switch settings unless that many persons are present in the vehicle. Any CAVs incorrectly using the 2 or 3+ switch setting without that many occupants in the vehicle will be subject to CHP citation. Solo drivers in non-clean air vehicles will pay full price for the toll.

While solo drivers and two-person carpools in Clean Air Vehicles will pay half price with a FasTrak CAV toll tag, those include red, purple, and orange decals. If you're driving in the Express Lanes on State Route 237 in Santa Clara County, whether you mean to or not, you must do so with a FasTrak transponder. This new requirement to be able to access express lanes gives commuters an option to bypass congested lanes in one of the most crowded arteries in the South Bay. The requirement to have a FasTrak applies to everyone in the lane – even motorcycles, carpoolers and previously exempt clean air vehicles.

FasTrak is the statewide toll collection system used to pay tolls electronically in California. FasTrak lets customers pay their tolls electronically on the I-15 Express Lanesand South Bay Expresswayin San Diego County, and any toll road, bridge, or express lane in California bearing the FasTrak logo. FasTrak Charge- FasTrak Charge allows payment for individually charged tolls and is free to set up. It is accepted on every California toll bridge, lane and road.

FasTrak Charge does not include discounted toll fee features. The FasTrak Flex toll tag is a convenience, but is not required, for toll-free travel in the SR-237 and I-680 Express Lanes as a carpool, motorcycle, or eligible CAV. If you have a standard FasTrak toll tag, you must enclose it in a Mylar bag to avoid being charged a toll. If you have a FasTrak Flex toll tag, you can leave it mounted on your windshield and use the switch position to identify your vehicle for toll-free travel. When you pass through a bridge toll lane without paying the toll or travel in the I-580 express lanes without a valid FasTrak tag, an image of your license plate is captured.

The first notice requests payment for the toll amount and an additional $25 penalty. Most express lanes require a FasTrak Flex® toll tag to travel toll-free. Outside posted hours of operation, express lanes are open to general traffic at no charge and have no requirements for FasTrak® or vehicle occupancy.

When traveling as a single-occupant vehicle in the SR-237 express lanes, eligible CAVs will receive a 50% discount off the toll if they use a FasTrak CAV toll tag. It is the only toll tag that will communicate the correct discount to roadside equipment. BATA began distributing FasTrak toll tags through Costco warehouses and Safeway stores in as part of a comprehensive plan to expand and improve electronic toll collection in the Bay Area. Currently, there are more thanFasTrak account holders in the nine-county region.

During peak periods, FasTrak-equipped vehicles account for more than 60 percent of peak-period traffic on Bay Area toll bridges. In the past, carpoolers, motorcyclists, and clean-air vehicles with eligible decals were able to use the Express Lane without FasTrak. Carpoolers and motorcyclists can continue to use the lane for free, but only with the adjustable FasTrak Flex toll tag.

Motorcyclists should move the switch to the 3+ position before beginning their trip. While the need for a transponder is new to SR 237, this has been the practice on all Bay Area bridges and for Express Lanes on I-580 and on I-680 in Contra Costa County for several years. Customers with a clean air vehicle are eligible for a 15% discount off the posted toll rate on the I-10 and I-110 Metro ExpressLanes. To receive the discount, customers with a clean air vehicle need a valid DMV-issued CAV decal and a copy of the vehicle's official California DMV vehicle registration.

Carpoolers and those eligible to use carpool lanes must have a FasTrak Flex toll tag to use the lanes toll-free. It is the only way to travel toll-free in the express lane. When traveling as a single-occupant vehicle in the in the I-880, I-680 Contra Costa, or SR-237 express lanes, eligible CAVs will receive a 50% discount off the toll if they use a FasTrak CAV toll tag. FasTrak is accepted across all the toll roads, bridges and express lanes with electronic toll gantries across the state of California. One of the great incentives with purchasing a qualifying plug in vehicle or hydrogen fuel cell vehicle is the ability to drive solo in the carpool lane provided you add carpool lane stickers to your vehicle. The California Clean Air Vehicle program started back in with a white sticker for electric and hydrogen vehicles.

There were not many production freeway-speed capable vehicles at that time. Inthe program was expanded with a yellow sticker for hybrids that made the Toyota Prius famous and use of the program became more apparent. Vehicles do not need to be new to apply for a decal. A clean air vehicle whose prior owners never applied for a clean air decal in California can apply for the new decal.
